164: Playing to Not Get Hurt or Playing To Win

I picked up lacrosse really quick. And after playing from only my sophomore year in high school, I got a scholarship to a Division 1 college my senior year.

Up until this point I had never injured anything. And so I had no reason to think that that would happen. And in all fairness, I was overly confident. Some may say I was cocky. It’s true 🙂

But after getting injured it was almost as if my brain worked differently. I started second guessing myself when in the past I would just rock it. I was quick. I was super nimble. And I was ballzy.

Pain and injury changes people. And not just physical injuries.

But just like physical injuries, times we’ve failed, or gotten hurt emotionally start to shape our behavior so we avoid pain.

We avoid the potential of pain in the future based on pain in the past.

As a result we protect ourselves. We start to question and sometimes second guess if what we’re doing is right… if we’ll be safe.

But what we’re really doing is protecting our pain.

Here’s the point. After I hurt my knee, I was afraid.

I didn’t want to get hurt again and I played it safe. And when I got to college about a year after this photo, it just got harder. And unfortunately I was still playing not to get hurt.

But trying not to get hurt was a lot different than playing to win.

I’ve seen this show up in personal relationships, in my business, and in sports and fitness. But the beauty of it is this.

Once I noticed it and started to consciously push what I thought was my limit, the perceived upper limit on what was possible got shattered.

And what happened after that was even cooler. I started questioning everything… in a good way. In a way that sparked the light of… what else is possible.

So now it’s your turn…

Are you protecting your insecurities and playing to not get hurt or are you playing to win?
