116: 2017 Year in Review

In today’s show I unpack my major lessons learned and a couple guiding principles from 2017 in a sort of year in review.

These guiding principles locked everything else into place and served as a guide for my choices and actions moving forward.

In this episode, I share some of these insights, lessons learned and guiding principles with you in hope that it will give you context and meaning in the situations or challenges you find yourself in and how to look at 2018 through a new lens.

These two overarching principles served as an anchor that locked the lessons in place.

#1 – Learn your lesson quickly and move on

The tendency to over-process, and overthink is enough to drive anyone crazy. When I finally gave myself the opportunity to look at what I was going not as a situation that needs to be fixed, not as something that I had to get rid of, but when you gave myself the opportunity to really drop in and have the experience and navigate it, it was easier to come out the other side and have the lesson learned.

Trying to always make meaning along the way can stop you from fully experiencing the event and lead to being rigid and miss the signs pointing you in the right direction. As I’m coming to understand this more, it’s my way of letting this go by extracting the lesson and then moving on.

#2 – Finding your center – your home frequency

Call it the times, but 2017 seemed to pull me in many different directions. I found myself getting easily distracted and even comparing myself to others. I started to think I wanted what other people had or that my goals should resemble theirs.

Through doing some work around my values, I realized what was important to me and set the course to relentlessly pursue that.

Here are my top 5 Lessons from 2017

#1 – The most powerful thing you can do is put yourself around people who are committed to change, knowing themselves more, and creating deeper meaning in their life… people who are in line with your top values. The support, the sounding board, the power of other people to inspire you and also help you see that we all struggle at times is huge. Going internal to tune in is awesome, but learn your lesson quickly and move on. There’s no shame asking for help.

#2 – If you don’t focus on it, it ain’t gonna change. Making big commitments is great, but if you don’t have a system in place for staying the course, for putting consistent attention on and action into your goals, you’ll fail before you ever get started. Review and refine accordingly.

#3 – Find out what works for you and honor YOUR process. It’s hard to try and be somebody else and think that you have to do it their way to be successful. Do what makes you feel more like you and be cool with that.

#4 – Getting it out there is more important than getting it perfect. It’s easy to sit and think and deliberate. It’s even easier to convince yourself that it’s a good thing. Don’t get caught up in perfect execution, just focus on your home (your center, your home frequency) and follow the queues one step at a time. Trust that shit. (I used to think that perfect execution was more important than doing and refining. This was one of the biggest trip ups ever! AND was one of the reasons I waited way too long to start the solo rounds.)

#5 – The light casts a shadow, don’t be afraid of it. AND you can never actually get a hold of a shadow, so just notice it. (yes, metaphorical and… this one is liberating)
